MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 123 ignition Vs Weber Alpha.

Well, I've come into posession of this Weber Alpha complete kit but I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that is not going to be the solution to my problems. It was cheap and I thought it might help with tuning the Austin 7, the Morris sidevalve with the modified engine and then be suitable for dropping into the Lenham midget when the time comes to putting it back on the road with the rebuilt engine (Maybe next year....)
So, Does anyone want a Weber Alpha kit to exchange for a 123 kit? Never been out of the box and still sealed in plastic. Failing that, does anyone have real experience of utilising the functions of the 123?

Speak to Peter Burgess.
I got mine from him and I like it. However I have no other electronic ignition to compare it to and since it went on a newly rebuilt engine I haven't compared it back to back with anything else.
Because (I think) that a lot of the parts are made by Bosch, everything fits goether very very snugly. Although I think it's daft that you have to take the dizzy out to adjust the profile rather than having someting on the side to adjust it in situ.

They can realy only be compared if you say they are both contactpoints free ignition systems

Other wise they are just to difrent.

With the 123 you have a electronic distributor with several (4 per max advance setting) curves witch may or may not match your engine.
This is an improvement on the std distributor

With the weber you go distributor less and have a system that can be completely be tailored to your engine.
This is an improvement of the "giant leap for mankind" level.

but a 123 will work way more easy and is a great piece of kit

I think with a standard engine being able to adjust the advance curve is of very limited value.
Then on a highly modified engine where advance needs trimming in mid range etc o avoid detonation then the Programmable sits miles ahead of anything else and as described above is a giant leap for mankind/A series.

Not sure that the 123 gives much of an advantage over standard dissy and electronic ignition. The problem is that most times these 123 dissies replace a standard item that is faulty and naturally a good improvement occurs.

I have the weber alpha on my engine and would love another system if the price was cheap. If you want mega bucks for it then I will stand back and let you make a few bob. Let me know if you are willing to deal cheap, will understand if you need to get a good price though

Want it for the price of a 123? I was after a means of dialing up an advance curve on different engines since the old engines were designed with awful manifolds and for cheap pool petrol. The Alpha works the wrong way round for me. I want to try different curves whereas the 123 allows you to do this without sending it away. If the Alpha was home programmeable then it would've been fine.
There seems to be quite a few extra bits in there. I'll do an inventory later today.

The 123 supplied by Peter Burgess comes ready to fit with the correct side-entry cap already done. No adapting to be done.
