MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 engine number

I am looking for a 1275. Somebody offered me one; number 12v/671 Z/.L 441. What kind of engine is it what is a reasonable price (already years out of a car)

It’s a later 1275 midget, presumably North American as it is low compression and has the air injection ports in the head.

If it’s complete, then anything under about €700 would be considered reasonable.

I notice that Andy Jennings is now advertising 1275 engines for £1000 ‘when available’ and presumably in whatever condition.

So according to the number it is a late Sprite exported to the US. What tells the red head? If I see the engine what to look for?

It all depends what you want to do with it.
If you directly want to fit it then check all (free to rotate, axial play crank pulley, how does it look under the rocker cover etc)
If it is for a complete rebuild then just check for crack in the castings.

Onno,
It is for a rebuild. In the past I overlooked a crack in the head(in my own 945 engine)for years..

PS do you know an 1275 somewhere in the Netherlands?
Flip Brühl

Several in my shed but non I want to part with ;)

If it is for a complete rebuild just make sure it is free and has all the parts that are midget/inline specific.

Minute cracks will only show up with crack testing so frost damage is all you are looking for.
