MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 rebuild update

The rebuild of the 1275 in my 1971 midget is complete. The crank went back standard with only polishing. The cylinders were bored to .020 and the camshaft and tappets were replaced. These were in poor condition so the break in oil was treated with ZDDP additives, and the engine is being carefully run in. 1 valve and 4 guides were also replaced. Power is greatly increased and the engine is running at normal temperatures (it's cooler out now that it is fall too).

The new Rivergate rear seal leaks as badly as the old one, even though the replacement is Viton. There is a wear ridge on the crank flange so next time, I will have this cleaned up (leveled off) and try a different seal ID diameter.

I had the Datsun 5 speed completely rebuilt. Syncros were worn not on the conical side but on the fork sides. 2nd and 3rd had been grinding badly. This transmission feels as close to the ribcase when it was new as the Datsun ever has.

So, I have a new Midget with 247,000 miles on it!
Glenn Mallory

I envey you glenn and congrats on your success, thats got to be a feeling of incrediable accomplishment.

Im still locked in a brutal fight for a test of wills between my engine and myself. eventually its going to submit and do as its told. LOL
