MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 Air Filter Hoses

Hi, I've seen some 1500 midgets with & without 2 intake hoses from the air filter cover to the front grill. Are these necesary? Do they help with performance in any way. I am just wondering as mine doesn't have any?
Thanks

hello keven

mine doesn't have them either but i've been advised to replace them as the engine doesn't like drawing in hot air in summer (if we ever get a summer this year!!!)

I believe the air inlet hoses were only introduced on the later 1500s probably from GAN6 200000 onwards.
Perhaps they were introduced to bring cooler air to the carbs as you mentioned.

It would be interesting to know whether they also produced some ram effect, as the inlets being located behind the radiator grill must be in a high pressure area when the car is on the move.

Good info Dave - Horler has pics with and without, but a quick scan of the 1500 chapter didn't reveal a Change Point.

Interestingly, the US-spec 1500s, with the single ZS carb, drew intake air through a pre-heater assembly located behind the carb, just over the footwell. Seems to me that this would be probably the hottest part of the engine bay! Hmmm... I wonder if the filter box cover would fit upside-down, and if so, I could remove the air mix valve and run a flex hose up to the grille.
