MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 brake master cylinder.
Hi All. Does it make a difference which port on the tandam master cylinder you plumb in the front and rear brakes? Thanks |
s page |
Yes--the front brakes are at the pushrod/mounting flange end of the cylinder. |
William Revit |
it depends on which master cylinder you have later ones had dual circuit brakes earlier ones just had a banjo connection for the front brakes |

Aren't all 1500's dual circuit---?? |
William Revit |
Nope Willy. Mine is '76 and single circuit. It changed in 77 or 78 (I forget). Malc. |

It depends on which market. US had dual-circuit from 1968. I don't know about anywhere else - except UK, that is. |

My 1975 1500 is single circuit. At some point I'll get round to converting it to dual circuit for peace of mind. It worries me a little having no redundancy. |
Chris Madge |
Hi. Mine is a tandem or dual circuit master cylinder. Thanks. |

Mine was registered 1/1/79, it could have been in stock for a while but it's got single circuit brakes. How are the circuits split? |

Diagonally, the idea is that you still have some braking if a single point failure occurs (ref recent halfshaft/hubnut thread)
I bent a Morris van in my youth - corner of a narrow road, something came the other way so I stomped on the brake and a rusty steel pipe burst, it was single circuit so followed shortly afterwards by opting for a sliding contact with a wall rather than a head-on with the other vehicle. Fortunately low speed and stout wall so I got away with a good used replacement wing and headlamp. My MG is single circuit but the pipes are all kunifer. |

Adrian, thanks for the reply. I rebuilt my brakes last year replacing everything except the master cylinder, I also used kunifer.
I assumed it would be a diagonal split, so therefore two pipes down to the back axle, not a big deal but when everything else on the car is so minimalist I thought they might have split them back and front, although I suppose that wouldn't be much better than a single circuit if it was the front that you lost. The only consolation is since the rebuilt the handbrake is working quiet well, although having tried using a handbrake as a test to stop the car, it's only marginally better than no brakes. |

Diagonal is incorrect, the brakes on 1500 midgets are split F/R and have a single brake pipe to the rear
|
William Revit |
Thanks for that info, it would certainly make retro fitting dual circuit a lot easier if they're split F/R and if I have to replace the MC I would definitely consider it. |

What Willy says. |
