MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 differential flange
Just discovered the source of my drivetrain vibration. Pulled the drive shaft out for new u-joints and discovered the differentional flange is bent (the flange bolted to diff input shaft)...the flange wobbles like I did last Saturday night after a few home brews! Surfed the web for the flange, but so far coming up empty. Anybody out there know where I might find one ('78 midget 1500), new or usede? |

DL, I would be happy to ship you one from a noisy 4.22 I have here. Be aware that you might want to pull the center section out of the axle and take it to a differential guy... or not. There is a nut that holds it onto the pinion shaft; I believe it is torqued to a ridiculous number like 140 lb-ft. If you remove that, replace the seal in there, install the replacement flange and tighten the heck out of the nut. If you choose to replace the entire center section, please be aware that your 78 should have the highly desireable 3.73 ratio diff which is hard to find. Don't swap it for anything else (unless you swap it with me ;-). David "let me know if you want the flange" Lieb |

Actually my wobbling and home brews came after I discovered the wobbly flange.Bought the car 4 weeks ago. Spent 3 weeks getting car road worthy and on first test drive above 45 mph discovered the vibration caused by wobbly flange. Yes David, I want the flange. I'm off to work shortly, but I'll e-mail you later when I get back home. Thank You! David Rhine |

David, Just email me a snail-mail address. I should have a chance to pull it tonight. Just make sure that you read up on the proper procedure for replacing it. As I said, you can probably get away with a simple replacement, but there is always a chance that it will need a professional's touch.
