MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 gearbox identification
Two questions: How do you identify a 1500 gearbox? If what I've been given is one (it looks possible), does anyone want it, because I was going to chuck it in the scrap heap. |

Firstly it will have STANPART stamped on the gearbox casing. If it's a single rail (midget 1500, Spitfire 1500, Dolomite 1500/1850 or Marina) then it will have a 23 spline input shaft and the selector mechanism comes out of the rear extension. If it is a 3 rail box (Spitfire/Herald) then it will have a 10 spline input shaft and the selector mech is on the top of the box shrouded by an extension cover. The single rail box as fitted to the 1500 Midget looks like this: |

The 3 rail Herald/Spitfire gearbox looks like this: |

Deborah, thanks, it looks like a single rail, I'll double check when I get home. I might not boot it out until I check whether it's any use to anyone. I once chucked a MkI steering wheel out, it was a long time ago but I feel ill when I think about it. Not that I'd fit one, felt like driving a boat. |
