MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 Mufflers
What are you 1500 guys using for mufflers? I've pretty much finished up my intial to do list & I'm looking to upgrade the exhaust next. Dave |

Well if you are on a Budget then an easy fix is too junk the two rear boxes and put a single straight through MGB back box on in its place. I have done this on a 1275 in teh past and it worked a treat, I am currently looking for one on eBay to do the same again to my 1500. |

Ben Thanks for the idea, I hadn't thought about an MGB can. I tried a straight thru 1275 can last summer, but it was too loud...raised the eyes of the local constables. Not good, I don't need that. |

Anybody have experience with Monza mufflers? They're kinda pricey for just a single muffler. It looks like they're readily available from different sources & easily fitted. Just wondering if they were worth the money. Dave |

Dave: FWIW the Monza unit I had on my car lost an internal weld on a baffle and would then rattle and buzz at every multiple of 1200 RPM. Quite irritating. This happened after about 8,000 miles or so. Even if they fired the welder who couldn't make it stick, I'm sure many more of the units he built are out there waiting to be purchased. That said, I did like the look of those double dual tips. I ended up buying a 19" x 5" can with 2" in/out at my local muffler shop for $60, welded on one of those nice Monza dual tips from the old muffler and am happy enough with it. It's actually quieter than the Monza unit ever was, and the older I get the more I appreciate that. From the looks of my install, I think a longer, narrower can might be preferable, but 19" x 5" definitely fits. Richard "what do I do with the other dual tip" Reeves |

RJ You've given me an idea, seeing the tip welded to the end. I've got a stock (too loud ) 1275 can, I'm thinking of getting a VW (air cooled) baffled tail pipe & welding to the end of it...they come in all shapes & sizes & cheap! I'm getting older too & just looking for a system that will flow better than stock, but not much louder. |

Yes the 1275 single rear cans sound great when you first fit them but 6 months down the track when half of the filling has blown out the back and they are wey to loud. The MGB box has a much bigger volume and also a usefully larger bore too. |

I run a minispares sourced RC40 on mine, isn't too loud and only cost 27 quid for a brand new one... possibly available form minimania in the US? worked so well that dad fotted one on his as well, just fits in the gap between tank and spring on RHD A series midget, is the 1500 one any different at the back? http://www.flickr.com/photos/34910348@N08/3404316015/ Rob |

I've currently got the stock-spec exhaust plumbing on mine, although it appears to be an old replacement. I keep waiting for it to rust out so I can replace it with something more interesting! I'd probably go for the MGB item. Yeah, the Monza looks snazzy but it's too pricey for me. -:G:- |

Mine's starting to rust, so just trying to get some ideas. Yes, the MGB can looks interesting & reasonably priced. Thanks guys Dave |
