MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 67 Midget differential question
I purchased my midget in early May. I finally have it ready for the road, but I have a question about the differential. I hear a snap each time I put it into gear. Holding onto the input shaft of the differential, I have no movement in the drive shaft U joints. There is about 1/4" play in the differential. Can the car be driven with that much play? I have to have the car inspected by the state, and the inspection office is 60 miles away. Joe |

The Spridget diffs are notoriously sloppy and yours sounds just about normal. however not sure what you mean by a "snap" but if you have wire wheels, you often get a clunk from worn wheels when setting off! |

Joe, A long shot, but my Midget was making a snapping/clicking sound when taking off and taking up slack. I thought I needed to rebuild the diff, but when I discovered and fixed a frozen parking brake arm on the left rear wheel, the noise went away. Diff is still sloppy, but no worse than the rest of them. Hope that helps. Lee |

Joe, 1" measured over the outside of one tire, (the other tire fixed) is still normal Flip |

I'll check the parking brake and the amount of play at the rear wheel. The wheel did feel pretty warm after a 5 mile run last evening. Thanks, Joe |
