MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 67 Midget differential question

I purchased my midget in early May. I finally have it ready for the road, but I have a question about the differential. I hear a snap each time I put it into gear. Holding onto the input shaft of the differential, I have no movement in the drive shaft U joints.
There is about 1/4" play in the differential. Can the car be driven with that much play? I have to have the car inspected by the state, and the inspection office is 60 miles away.

The Spridget diffs are notoriously sloppy and yours sounds just about normal.
however not sure what you mean by a "snap" but if you have wire wheels, you often get a clunk from worn wheels when setting off!

Joe,
A long shot, but my Midget was making a snapping/clicking sound when taking off and taking up slack. I thought I needed to rebuild the diff, but when I discovered and fixed a frozen parking brake arm on the left rear wheel, the noise went away. Diff is still sloppy, but no worse than the rest of them.
Hope that helps.

Joe,
1" measured over the outside of one tire, (the other tire fixed) is still normal

I'll check the parking brake and the amount of play at the rear wheel. The wheel did feel pretty warm after a 5 mile run last evening.
Thanks,
