MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 76 1500 IGNITION ?
I am gaining on the reconstruction of my 76 midget (USA)....or so it seems for the last week. However, I am not completely sure about the ignition/tach wiring. I have the 25D distributor, not the electronic one that originally came on the car. I placed the single WG wire to the + of the coil because it only produces 9 volts and put the WK (White/Black) lead from the 3 wire plug that went to the electronic distributor to the - side of the coil so my tach would work. Then I have a wire from the - side of the coil to the distributor which gives me 5.5 volts. Is all this correct?? Thanks ....AL with the Green Midget Machine |

Al - No! We had an extensive discussion of these things a few months ago, matbe July - all about the IGN wires on the late Spridgets. Try to find it. W is White, B is Black, G is green, LG is Light Green, K is pinK Don't use anything from the plug, tape it up. You should have two W/LG in the area, one will have about 6V on it when the key is ON, the other will have 12V when the key is in Start position, both go on the coil +. You can't accurately measure voltage on these without a load, but the one showing 9V should be the 6V lead. There should be a single W/B from the coil - to the distributor if you have points, otherwise as required by whatever you have. And there should be a W/B from the harness - that's the sense wire for the tach; it goes on the coil - also. FRM |

In my '78, the two W/LG wires are crimped into a common terminal that you plug into the positive side of the coil. You say you're just seeing one W/LG? -:G:- |

Thanks. I switched it like you said and all is OK. Runs well and the tach works. I also have the double W/LG wire and my W/B wire is a double too. When the engine is running I am reading 9.5 Volts on the + side of the coil and 5.7 volts on the - side of the coil. |

Yes, the "V in" measured running is an time factored average of what it actually is when conducting (c6 or 7V) and 12V when it's not, as the points open and close. The "V out" measured running is an average of what it actually is when conducting (c6 or 7V) and zero when it's not, as the points open and close. FRM |
