MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 948 crankshafts and halfshafts
A couple of the threads here give me the impression that it is quite common for the early cars to break both crankshafts and halfshafts. Is that so? Makes me wonder if I should take any precautions during the rebuild of my 948 midget. Tore |

Yes, it is so. Look for a set of halfshafts from a 1500 Midget and slap them in during the build. Pick up a cheap 1098 and make it look like a 948. David "non-concours" Lieb |

Moss Europe lists three halfshafts that will fit my car: BTA806, the same as for the later Midgets, the "uprated" BTA806X and the nitrited BTA940. Does anyone know what the "uprated" one is like, and if the quality of the standard BTA806 is decent? I will run the car with a very mildly tuned 948 engine, 145 tyres and no competitions of any kind. Tore |

I've never broken a BTA806, even when I had a 2000cc Lancia twincam in my Midget. 20+ cars and 20+ years playing with them. Keep the shafts in the same axle casing that they arrived in and there will be no high spots or 'stress raiser' areas. After 30 years the wear should be equal at all points! |
