MG Midget and Sprite Technical - A whole new loom
Hi all, Just been examining the loom in my '70 midget.. Looks quite hacked about, and also (as the last owner dismantled the front of the car before I bought it) none of the front wires are marked.. Anyone had experience refiting an unmarked loom, or alternatively, what are the new replacement looms like? Cheers Tim |

Although on first sight the wiring may appear complicated - there really isn't anything that shouldn't be traceable and understood on a Midget. The colour coding has a certain logic behind it and together with pictures of the more complicated areas from other cars (which I'm sure will be forthcoming if you need them) then it should be entirely possible to refit even if currently unmarked. I'm afraid I dont have experience of the new looms. |

Autosparks (UK), is, as I am lead to understand, the source of new wiring looms for LBC retailers like Moss and others (someone correct me if I am wrong about this). The advantage of buying from a wire harness company, rather than from a supplier like Moss is that if you have a particular issue with the new loom, they can talk you through it. Or send you the one component you need. Norm |

Not disagreeing with Norm but I fully support what Dean has said. To the untrained person the car wiring looks far more complicated than it is. In reality it is a very simple system that once understood is very easy to repair. A soldering iron and a few bullet connectors and hey presto the harness can be made like new. As Dean says any issues simply ask here and there is more than a couple of members who will easily put you on the right track. |

Dave, thanks for the offer.. Bit premature though as I am still at the body stripping and welding stage. Hopefully the rewiring stage will be next winter I too will be at Stoneleigh. Tim |

To save being overwhelmed by the wiring diagram draw each component's routing on to a separate piece of paper and tackle one component at a time. |

Tim, I fitted a new loom to my heritage shell - the original had been cut about, including those horrible scotch lock connectors that cut into the wire, corrosion had worked up wire ends/brittle + plastered in old paint etc. As long as you take a good note of original routing and either mark all connectors before removal or cut the wires leaving the colour coded ends in place on instruments/switches for wire by wire swopping over, its fairly straight forward. I think I only had one instrument bulb holder that had a different fitment that required modding. Loom (Front and Rear) ex Moss - as I was fitting an alternator to my RWA I got the later loom to suit. The front lights are fairly easy to work out from coding colours - especially as Dave has volunteered ! R. |

Autosparks are an excellent company to deal with, whether it's for a complete loom or odd bits and pieces. They'll make looms with original-style cloth braiding if you wish, and add whatever extra wiring you want. Usual disclaimers - no connection, etc, but it does help that they're only 10 minutes away from me. Kevin |
