MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Aeroscreen Project
Hi everyone, So I know you can buy Brooklands aero screens (not my favourites) and proper, full on race polycarbonate screens from Peter May etc. great products I'm sure but far too pricey for me. I'm after making a very short aeroscreen from polycarbonate, using the bottom rail of an original midget windscreen as a base (same rout dimensions as the one in the picture, perhaps a bit shorter). The only thing is, what's the thickness of the glass used in the frame? I can buy 4, 5, or 6mm thick plastic from my local supplier. Any tips from anyone on anything else?! Thanks as always, Josh |

The glass in my 1977 Midget 1500 is 5mm Triplex. But the thickness is pretty approximate and varies across the screen. |

Why not make up a simple bent aluminium or steel angle to mount the plastic aero screen? And then pop rivet this to the car.If you do not want to buy thicker pop rivets to mount the plastic to the frame you could always use plastic number plate bolts and screws. For info 4mm thickness is the minimum for screen thickness motorsport in the Uk (see regulation J5.520.08: http://msauk.org/uploadedfiles/msa_forms/bluebooks/14/144_152_Common_Regulations_for_Competitors_(Vehicles)_(J).pdf) Some examples of screens: http://austinhealeyspritemk2.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/austin-7-special-pictures.html And full range of aeroscreens http://www.completeautomobilist.com/categories/complete-automobilist-auto-accessories-aeroscreen-and-wind-deflector Cheers Mike |

Josh 750 Motor Club racing cars have similar homemade screens, such as on Formula 750, 750 Trophy and Locost 7, e.g. http://www.naddervalleyclassics.co.uk/index.asp?section=15&page=433 http://www.750trophyracing.co.uk/drivers-cars.html Cheers Mike |

I love that, I really do. I just don't know if they'd let me through scrutineering with that in standard road going class for MSA sanctioned Sprints. Daniel? |

Gary I see wider difficulties; usually 'roadgoing' class needs current MOT etc. However it has a screen but no w/wipers so won't pass MOT like that. |

I made a simple aluminium bracket for the Sprite, as I was thinking of going topless. I 'stretched' it to fit the curve of the scuttle

David, My car is MOT exempt :0) |

David. I checked with the MOT tester and he showed me that if you can see over the screen then there is no legal requirement for wipers. Besides, they'd need to be an inch long to keep them for falling over the top. Passed the MOT every year, although I did print off a copy of the relevant page to keep in the glovebox, just in case. http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_820.htm |

All good info guys, thanks; 'where there's a will there's a way' |

Could you not cut the glass very very carefully with a diamond cutter as used for cutting tiles/ceramics etc.?! Perhaps a dangerous and fun Prop-esque experiment if you are going to chuck the glass in the bin anyway :-D Malcolm |
M Le Chevalier |
Although finding a tile cutter big enough could be an issue. That's what would make it fun! ha ha. Prop, come on, back me up on this mad idea!! |
M Le Chevalier |
Diamond cutting wheel on a pneumatic cutoff tool and a water line to keep it cool and patience and luck = success cutting down a glass windshield. |

How about this with wipers too?

Pritty cool isn't it? He made it out of thick materieal, first one he made flexed to much on speed. |

otherwise he just shortened a standard frogscreen. Btw, the wipers were useless the owner told me but good enough to get him thrue MOT then(2008). |
