MG Midget and Sprite Technical - air filters or not
hi, any comments welcome, I currently have a 40 weber dcoe carb on my midget. it has ram pipes with no filters. as they are there is very little space between the end of the trumpet and the inner wheel arch, my question is air filter or not and if so what type? thanks in advance. |

ITG would be my bet.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130245778774&cguid=0eabbbb211f0a0aad25236e2ff8b5024 for example...I would also recommend their full radius ram pipes How long is your inlet? you might need to relieve a little bit of the inner wing to make it fit |

A long inlet manifold and long trumpets are usually desirable for maximising torque and/or power. However running in road conditions without filters will increase engine wear rate massively. So fit a good filter and sacrifice trumpet or manifold length if you don't want to cut away the inner arch. |

Although not perfect you could use a couple of the ITG foam socks they will at least fit and save your engine. Carl |

Carl, I had fitted ITG Foam Socks to my 1310 fitted with a 45DCOE. When Spamspeed set it up on his RR his comment about the socks was 'I took them off as they were strangling the engine' - gained another 7BHP! David Smith is correct of course about engine wear - I now run sprints and hill climbs with just the longer bellmouth as wear is not an issue for me but for a good reliable road car it is. I believe K&N are rated as a good balance between fitration and power Regards John |

From what I have found it is better to go with a shorter manifold and FR pipes so that it fits. In a perfect world a 7" manifold AND FR pipes but that does require hacking the wing about.... |

Ran mine on RR with and without socks and there was only a miniscule difference, so I keep the socks on. |

socks will work but if still tight for space ( and acording to a couple of rolling road guys iv spoken to socks are the worst filter at nicking power ! ) and your using the original type weber trumpets , what about the clip on gauze filter as per image there a multi layer of crossed gauze and not that dear also apparently dont nick power

The socks robbing an engine of power is a bit of an urban myth I think. On mine, I actually gained a couple of bhp with them on (Slark's rollers). Surely if the jetting/needles are correct for the airflow then they should be fine. |
John Collinson |
maybe its a weber thing and su's get away with it , the last time i was on rollers ( november northampton motorsport )the operator took the socks off and instantly 3 bhp gain ( see it with my own eyes )and apparntly the bigger the engine/ air flow the worse it gets, he even had a D type rep with a tuned 3.8 with tripple webers eat one of its own socks sucked it right in through the engine oops , but as everyone is saying id sooner sacrefice 3 or so bhp then have premature engine wear all ways use something |

gentelman clean your socks!! the itg socks should not rob you of anny more than 1 or 2 bhp And the benifit of not wrecking your engine is rather big! you also should not clip trumpets for this wrecks the air flow mor than fitting shorter trumpets |
Onno Könemann |
The manifold is 12cm long and the trumpets are 5.5cm long, it's a very tight fit! |

What about something like the screens that fit over the ends of the pipes? www.piercemanifolds.com/airfilters.htm Part number is 99217.225. |
