MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Alarming GRRRR (and wire wheel update)

Hi,

You may remember I posted on replacing the hubs - after a couple of weeks I've finally got around to finishing them and surprisingly, it goes, stops, turns and *doesn't* clonk. Yay!

However, although that is fixed, if I accelerate hard from a standstill, there is an alarming loud metallic GRRRR from the engine compartment - I've not been brave enough to see if it continues if I keep accelerating. I'm guessing clutch, but any other ideas?

Thanks,

Nigel

It could be lots of things.

What are the engine mounts like?

Do you have an LCB manifold?
Dave O'Neill 2

Engine mounts ok as far as I know - no obvious problems, though I will look again.

The car is a 100% stock early 1275, so the manifold is the one that came with the car. What is an LCB one?

Could still be the exhaust manifold, my original one was forever loosening the clamp.

Sounds to me a bit like the exhaust catching on the under body under acceleration......

I had a go today, and managed to record the sound.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could have a listen and give me a suggestion as to what it might be.

For info, I needed to rev it up a bit and drop the clutch quite quickly to get it to do it.

As I can't upload it to this BBS, I've uploaded the sound file here: http://www.soundupload.com/audio/634osrq416uojous

Wow, sounds like a circular saw to me!

Your heater trunking isn't touching the fan belt when you close the bonnet is it?
Don't ask me how i know.

That noise sounds to me a bit like something is catching the Dynamo / Alternator cooling fan....?

....or fan loose on the alt shaft? Alt fan touching the large cooling air pipe thingy? Stone up through the inspection plug hole at the bottom of the gearbox bellhousing? Aftermarket air filter bolt come loose and rattling around the valve guide? (Polishes the bolt beautifully but knackers the head) Bent fan blade contacting the timing cover breater or maybe the waterpump bolt is touching the waterpump if you've left the washers off from under the bolt head?

From the sound, I'd guess at about £200. :o)

Thanks for the estimate Rob, and all of you for the suggestions.

Just to clarify, I only get this when I accelerate very hard from a standstill.

I'm probably not going to get a chance to look at it before the weekend, but I'll get the bonnet up and see if anything looks like it is making contact.

Any more (cheaper than Rob's!) suggestions?

Cheers,

Nigel

Check the alternator bracket - it may have sheared where it comes off the block
Toby Anscombe

Sounds more expensive than that to me.
If we're guessing expensive, then i'll say cam shaft end float.
