MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Amco center console
I bought one of these at a swap meet. It is well preserved due to manufacturing defects in the corners. there is also a small crack somewhere. Now what i want to do is make a fiberglass copy of it. I like these way better than the moss alternative, and as an added bonus /, this optin is featured in the old MG midget dealer brochures. Two questions. 1) how do I best go about making a mould for making a new one out of fiberglass that doesnt have the cracks and defects. 2) Does anyone else want one?

When you say center console, do you mean the armrest piece that sits on the tunnel, and runs down to the shifter? Or the piece that goes between the tunnel and the dash? Thanks! |

It's the piece that sits on the tunnel and runs down to the shifter. It includes an armrest, a speaker, a place for an ashtray, and storage space under the armrest. |

A few years ago I almost bought one of those fiberglass consoles. It had pieces broken out of it and cracks everywhere and the seller wanted a fortune for it. I made my own out of 22 guage sheetmetal and rivets and then covered it in vinyl. Rik |

Wow, thats a cool modification! Never seen one of these before. Useless for those who have Ford/Toyota 5 speeds as the lever drops back. The one i use is a wooden box wich is rather high and thereby gives good arm support. I always put it in when traveling long distances. |

Hi Arie These consoles make it very hard to get your leg over the transmission tunnel ... surely a problem for an over-active individual like yourself? A |

Youre right Ant(dont ask me how i know) ;) But since i broke up with my last girlfriend half october last year i have been without a women... hence all the money spent on new spridget gadgets instead of useless gifts, dinners and weekend hollidays. LOL Always diffecult choices: spending time with a gorgeous women or on a gorgeous car. If you have one you want the other... LOL |

Hello Seth, This does look like a good project. Here are a couple of links to fibreglass info: http://www.fibreglast.com/contentpages-Learning-Center-283.html http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Make_a_fiberglass_fan_shroud Just make sure you wear protection - I've made myself allergic to the resins. I have one of these original AMCO consoles, it's exactly the same as the one in the brochure. Mine has a circular ashtray and insert. The armrest is exactly in the right spot and makes laying your arm down quite relaxing when driving long distances. I even was able to hookup the extra speaker that's there under the chrome grill section to a British Leyland MGB radio in combination with the factory console speaker above the radio. It had minor imperfections in the plastic corners, but the console make things looked much better as it covered the bald spot on my tunnel carpet! |
