MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Annoying Clonking at rear FIXED
midget Mk1
Telescopic shocks Been putting up with an annoying clonk coming from the passenger rear for a few months. Didn't seem to be rotationally affected, or speed affected, or necessarily bump/pothole affected, so was curious as to what was causing it. Car up on axle stands at the spring mounting point. Scaffold plank and block of wood employed as a lever under the wheel. Glamorous assistant (well ,son actually) employed to press on the plank to move the rear axle up and down. Me under the car with inspection lamp to see what, if anything, was moving (that should not have been moving). Lo and behold, the lower shocker mounting point was loose, causing about 1/2 inch of movement. Didn't make any noise in the test. However, tightened it up good and proper, and did likewise to the driver's side whilst under there. Nothing else moving or making any noise (although the shocks on both sides did make a clonk when they extended to the end of their travel (shorter than the drop straps) Was sure I did it up tight when I put the car back together, but must have settled and found a bit of play... Road tested, and all clonking gone ! |
