MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Autocross

Thinking about trying an autocross in October since there will be one nearby. I have the car pretty well sorted out, just looking for any tips that could be helpful for a newby. I have Pirelli 175/70 r13s on rostyle wheels. What tire pressures are being used?

CJ:

Have a look at this thread: This person started to aurtocorss last year and asked almost the exact question you did.
a year has passed and he has been living the dream. Perhaps he would be a good one to ask about what you are contemplating?

Regardless; go try it. Your eally do not need to make any changes to your car to go out and have a good time.

Get some white shoe polish from K-Mart and put aband of polish about 3-4 inches long along the side of the tire and the tread. Find an empty parking lot and do some tight turns. The pavement will wear away the polish. Adjust your tire pressures and keep a log of them. You want the polish to wear away just past the shoulder of the tread. Too little air will allow the tire to roll over onto the side wall. Too much air will only use the center of the tread. This is a very inexpensive way to determine tire pressures. You could also buy a contact pyrometer and measure across the tire in 3 places and adjust until the temps are equal. Go easy through the course the first time and learn the course. Your goal is to improve your time and have fun. You will be the lowest powered car there but possibily the only Brit. The field is full of WRX's and Evo's. I run a slightly modified '70 midget with Yokohama A032's. Have fun!!

Thanks for the input. I know what I'm getting into power-wise so I'm not looking to win any trophies. Just looking for some tips since I'm likely to be one of the classics and the only midget there. Thanks guys.

Spridgets are a blast to autocross. J's advice on tire pressure works well for street tires. Expect to need to remove spare tire and all other "loose" items from car at event, so plan to lose non-essentials before you leave home. Have Fun! Try not to get hooked or you might wind up with race tires, LCB header, fancy cam, LSD diff, etc. like me ;-)

DOH! Forgot to post the thread. Cool video of a Midget doing a good job on the cones.
