MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Axle drive flange dimensions

'morning All: I have to change the pinion oil seal and want to make up a tool to bolt to the drive flange to stop it from turning when I attempt to release those 140 ft lbs ! Does anyone have the dimensions of the drive flange / holes etc to enable me to drill a bar to suit?

many thanks...
David Cox

OD 3 3/8", ID 2 3/16", PCD 2 7/8".

Thanks Brad... but .. not being an engineer...."PCD" ? is that the diameter for the centres of the prop shaft fixing screw holes?
David Cox

David,

PCD = pitch circle diameter. It may or not be important in this case but IIRC the holes are not equally spaced on the PCD meaning the propshaft can only go on in 2 positions.

or you can use this:

1.5 x 1.5" angle iron and a shorter piece of flat stock. Add a few holes and some nuts/bolts and voila, a universal leverage, um, thingy.

David,
your right i measured it on the hoof as i was busy with other things, the OD & ID are correct though.

Norm: I like your idea, thanks for the photo.

And thanks to all who take the time to reply.

This BBS is just about the best source of helpful advice

Another option:

Craftsman/Sears & Roebuck makes a nifty chain wrench that makes this operation--and holding all kinds of pulleys, etc.--a snap. In the neighborhood of $20 bucks. I've used it on power steering pumps, the diff flange you're talking about, the crank pulley... all kinds of stuff.

I need the dimensions of the rear axle bearings and oil seal(midget 12.75 '69 model),can somebody help me? Takes 2 weeks to get them to Norway unless I can ask the local skf-bearings specialist if they stock them, for that I need dimensions.

Thanks, Eric de Haan

Eric,

I can't help with the specifics but the bearing and seal are standard metric items so you shouldn't have any problems getting them from a local supplier when you get the details. Don't go buying any from this information but IIRC the rear bearing is a 6207.
David Billington

Eric,

- Rr Hub seal dimensions OD 2.5, ID 1.75, seal lap 0.375".

- for the Rr Axle bearing, instead of the original "open" design, use a 207-FF (double sealed bearing, which then acts as a supplemental seal against axle oil leak). You should be able to purchase from any foreign auto parts store (also used in Subarus).

Hope this helps,
Norm

Eric,

Where are you in Norway? I come to Aalesund every week from the UK (via Oslo) and could bring some small parts?
