MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Bolt hole in rear wheel arch

I've just noticed there is what appears to be a tapped bolt hole on the inboard side on the lower front of the near side rear wheel arch - there doesn't appear to be one on the off side wheel arch. Any one know what it's there for? My car is 1964 Mk2 midget.

Mounting for exhaust pipe support rubber?
Guy Weller

Guy,

Don't think so - the exhaust is securely mounted by a bracket hung from the boot foor, and a rubber mounting just forward of the rear spring forward most mounting point. Besides, the position of this bolt hole makes it extremely unlikely it could be used to provide support for an exhaust mounting bracket.

Seat belt mounting?

Chris

Definitly not - this is only visible/accessible from the outside of the car, at the bottom of the wheelarch where it meets the sill/floor of the car.

Far too intriguing Adrian

any chance of a picture, huh?

Bill

I'll try to get one taken this evening, assuming I can get my mobile phone in the wheel arch in the right position to get a good picture.

Adrian

to attach the hook for hanging the car on the washing line to dry off after it's been washed (not that my car would know anything about that).
Is it heavy duty or quite small?
G Lazarus

At least big enough for a 5/16th inch bolt, I would say.

I think this may be a remainder of the fixings for the torque reaction arms that were part of the quarter-elliptic setup on the Sprites 1 & 2. For whatever reason these holes, now redundant, were still present on some parts in later cars with the half-elliptic. I think my Sprite 3 has them, but I haven't looked lately. A matter of changing the tooling, I suppose, that took a bit longer than expected after the introduction of the new design.

Sorry, there's just not enough light in the rear wheela arch with the car in the garage to get a decent photo on my mobile phone. Maybe ok with the car out on the drive in daylight, but won't be able to do that until Saturday.
Adrian

Ok, I've got the photos - let's hope this link works:

Gus has it, it's a leftover from the quarter elliptic suspension. Here's a photo of the bulkhead with the torque arm and bracket removed

...and the other side, with all the parts in place

BTW, the area near the sill is not rotted through, that's just the undercoating peeling off.
