MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Brake squeal
My (newly fitted) rear brakes are giving off a light high pitched noise on braking occasionally - it's not one of thosd horrific 'did I leave a spanner in the drum' sounds, but it's audible for sure. Is this a problem or is it just them running in, and will it affect my MOT next week? |

Are you sure you fitted the springs corrctly? They can contact the back f the hub which could be the problem. Or do you think it is a squeal from the friction surfaces? Someone years ago advised me to put a slight chamfer on the leading edge of shoes (some come like that anyway) and I have always done this since. Whether it makes any difference I have no idea - but it has become a part of the ritual whenever fitting new shoes. |

Yep, the springs are in the right place as far as I'm aware! You could be right about the surfaces. I'm not too concerned as the braking is phenomenal now (mintex front and back = YES) considering they're drums, but I'm worried MOT may decide it's not right. |

All new shoes should have a 1" gap from the base of the shoe to the start of the pad on the leading edge of the front pad. This leading edge is slightly chamfered already so you should not need to do that. clear?? |

<<<Someone years ago advised me to put a slight chamfer on the leading edge of shoes>>> Yes - always do this. I also run a file down the length of the corners too as vibrating sharp edges = squeal. Still my Mintex 1144's squeal like a pig at the front! |

<<<Still my Mintex 1144's squeal like a pig at the front!>>> I have 1144's on the front and they don't make a sound, i do have a servo though. Do most people have a servo? |

I've had 2 sets of 1144s on the front and they have never made a sound. I don't have a servo either. |

One of my fronts has recently started squealing in use after 1K quiet miles. I occasionally hear it chirruping whilst on the move too. 1144 pads here also. Any ideas? |

Brake very hard to even out the surface? :-) |

Try putting a shim between the pad and piston; try copper grease on back of pad and between pad and calliper (along where the pad moves wgen brake applied). A |

Done all that Ant! Still squeeky! |
Nick |
Me too. The 1144's started squeeking after Scotland, took them apart and copper greased them but they still squeal. |

try putting some axle grease on the pads and the drums where the pads make content,,,,,that should fix the squeal....LOL. For those that are NOT in the know...dont do this!!! only joking!!! SERIOSLY!!! It seemed mine did the samething, and it was just the pad bedding into the drum cause the drum was partially glazed,,,,it only did it a short time....I just cant remember, if it went away on its own or If I did something.....It seems I used an orbital sander with some fine grit paper, to break down the glaze... I wish I could be more help...I cant remember if that was on my truck or the midget, I did that on...Its been along time ago, and was only squelling enough to be a distraction, but not all that loud. anyway,,,see if you got any glazing on the drums where the shoes make contact. prop |
