MG Midget and Sprite Technical - BTA806 Half Shafts
To up date my broken half shaft, I got the broken end piece out. I found a half shaft on ebay that is an EN17. Now here's a question, both of my half shafts have 'BTA806' on them (the broken one and the good one) and that's it. No 'EN17' anywhere on either one. So I did a search and found the following posted by J Dawes: "BTA806 is the part number common to all steel wheel halfshafts wether they be made of EN7 or EN17. BL (or was it still BMC then?) in their infinite wisdom did not see it neccessary to change the part number when they uprated the shafts. The important marking is 'EN17' it may be faint and obscured by rust, but if it isn't there assume the shaft is EN7 and likely to snap like a carrot if a reasonable amount of torque is applied to it." If the above is true then I guess I'd better get two half shafts that are stamped EN17. My midget is a '73 so it should have came with upgraded shafts. I guess that somewhere along the way someone may have changed the shafts. |

Jon, My '72 had an older EN17 halfshaft and a 4.22 diff! So its safe to assume that many of our cars are a hodgepodge of years I also bought EN17's and also a 3.9. Phil "do both now" |
