MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Bump Steer
Just been helping a friend trying to sort out bump steer on his MG TD. This is of particular importance where I live in Scotland since the condition of the roads is dreadful. We found that when the rack was in its central position the steering wheel wasn't. The tracking had been set with the Steering wheel central so one knuckle on the rack was further out and the other further in. The length of exposed thread on the track rod ends was different. This affected the pivot point of the rack tie rods and we hope was causing the bump steer. The car is still in the air awaiting reconditioned shock absorbers and I look forward to seeing if a centralised rack will be the answer.

It'll make a difference for sure- i had the rack out of my elan here a while back and of course all the shims fell out as i pulled the rack out, so on refitting I just collected the shims up and poked half in each side--The rack on an elan is bolted down to a flat surface with shims to adjust/equalize the rack height. Well, it was terrible, -followed every little curve in the road--jacked him up and measured the height from the bottom pivot to the rack and it was .100"higher on one side than the other----I thought to myself that's probably not enough to be causing the terrible feel it had but pulled a .050" shim from the high side and poked him in the low side and remeasured and bingo' dead level---out the road for a test and couldn't believe the change for such a small amount- Hope you get the same result willy |
