MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Carburator conversion

I just bought a 76 midget. I want to replace the stock carburator. I read that a SU HS4 can be mounted on the stock manifold. Is the HS4 large enough or should I go to a HS6? What needle would you suggest for the HS4?
JL Johnson

I have a HS6 on a 1098 engine so a HS6 on a 1500 will be ok. The HS6 was used on engines up to 1800 engines.

The HS4 will downtune the setup.

There is a person on the britishcarforum.com that has recently done this conversion and found a suitable needle for his application. You might ask over there.

Depends on how much power you're looking for... an HS4 can supply the demands of a 70 bhp engine. The main factor will be finding a good manifold for a single carb (in terms of gas-flow).

Jl,

They do use duel HS4s on the 1500 everwhere else in the world except in the USA....If you wanted to do the duel HS4 set up it should be an easy swap...But I got to agree. using only "one" HS4 is not enough, unless your goal is maxumium fuel economy, and performace is ilrealevant.

I have run a single HS4 on a stock intake manifold on my 1500, performance was no better or worse than the single ZS carb. Can't tell you what needle is in it.
