MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Change that oil!
On fitting my Datsun box I filled it with lovely golden semi synth gear oil. 500 miles later I decided to change the oil and this is what came out. So if you've ever fitted a gearbox of unknown provinance then filled it and forgotten it you may like to do an oil change. I'll be doing another change sometime soon! |

you make a great point.... I would suggest on the next change ... empty the oil and fill the box up with kerosene or as you guys call it "parafin" and run it for 10 minutes or so,,,then drain it out and refill with oil....it will clean it out nicely but dont walk away and leave it, watch for any bad sounds, noises, ect. cause the karosene breaks down petroleum (oils) vary well and fast. prop |

You have a bigger problem. Explaining away the state of Sarah's washing up bowl. |

MY washing up bowl, I am lord in the kitchen. Now if it was the iron I would have some explaining to do. |

Jeremy, At least it doesn't appear to have a lovely metallic sheen like a newly reconed A series box produced on draining the oil at a similar mileage some years back. |

Hmmph I had occasion to drain about a quarter of a pint out of Lara's diff yesterday (long story, and quite quite boring) The drain off was more than slightly grey metallic sheeny blackish stuff When topped up with decent EP80/90 I felt rather happier |

Hmm Jeremy thanks for the warning. Put my Datsun tranny in 2500 km ago maybe a good time to change oil. Did the tranny rebuild myself so I am curious what debris I'll find. Nice first midget job in my new 20 by 35 ft shed:-) Where will I position my car? |
