MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Clutch Cover To Fly wheel
I am just putting a new cluch on my MKII 1098cc midget. I have got it ready to accept the gearbox. Before I bolt it together is there a torque setting for the bolts that secure the clutch cover to the flywheel, Haynes doesn't quote one nor http://www.spridget-tech.com/service_manual/Section-E.pdf. Any ideas. Thanks again Tony |

no torque setting just tighten them up evenly making sure it stays almost paralel. tight is tight |

I do the criss cross method and torque to 50 ft pounds...just my number I got from throwing a dart at a board.. as Ive never known the true torque number ither thats on a 1275 |

50 is a "bit" much. I use thread lock on these. |

IIRC the bolts are 5/16" UNF and an appropriate torque would be about 16 ft lbs. Lots of information about appropriate torques settings for sizes and grades of bolts on the internet, you just have to look. |

Hi Tony 25lbs/ft for 5/16th UNF is adequate. Peter |

ooops! pressed the submit too quick! Don't forget to use a plain flat washer and a spring washer on each setscrew. Peter |

Bloody Hell Prop....! I do hope you haven't tightened up yours to 50ft/lb. IF you have may I suggest you take your engine out and replace each bolt with new and set to the correct torque as Peter suggests. Failure to do this could result in the bolts shearing and the clutch cover exiting the bell housing into the footwell....! at 6000rpm!!!!!! Mark. |
