MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Clutch hydraulic pipe adaptor

Hi all, maybe you can all help me once again.

I've got a 1275 clutch slave cylinder but the pipe is for a 948 Sprite. On the Sprite it screws directly into the slave cylinder. On the 1275 it works via a flexible pipe. Offering up the end of the 948 clutch copper pipe to the 1275 slave there is a size discrepency, the hole in the 1275 slave is bigger than the hole in a 948 slave.

So, I want an adaptor to fit the smaller pipe end into the bigger slave hole.

Any ideas if other models might have such an adaptor. I have tried master cylinder adaptors for 1275 and 1500 midget brakes but they were not the right sizes.

Rob. The Frogeye and the Spridgets up to and including '66 all used the tandem m/cyl and although the cylinder bores were different for the Frogs as against the disc braked cars, the outlets were all the same ie brake pipe size. 1275s had separate cylinders and a larger bore clutch pipe and consequently larger flare nuts. You could change to separate m'cyls and buy a 1275 clutch pipe which will mate up with your flexi pipe.

Thanks Bernie. HAd a good think for an hour or so and figured a way of doing it.

I need adaptor part 42 in the diagram on the Moss website (Link above) and part 35. Part 35 is the larger bore clutch pipe. It normally joins to the slave cylinder with pipe 30 but I want it to go direct to the slave cylinder ala Frogeye. I need some flex in the clutch pipe and using part 35 RHD it will be too short. But the LHD part must be longer which should allow me to loop the pipe a couple of times to give me some flexure.

Sorted.

I got my adaptor from Powertrack brakes. it connects the larger bore of the cylinder with the smaller pipe from the frog master.

Rob. Adaptor 42 is fo M/cyl to pipe which means that the clutch M/cyl is the same bore as a normal brake pipe. When I stripped my 1275 I don't remember an adaptor. I'll have to look next time I'm in the garage because although they're scrap, I kept all the pipes. The larger pipe must be to do with the diaphragm clutch. I hope the larger bore won't cause you any problems if you are using the tandem M/cyl. By that I mean will the M/cyl be able to push enough fluid down the big pipe to move the slave sufficiently to operate the fork?

The pipe size shouldn't matter, it's the same amount of fluid required to move the slave piston.

yes the pipe size makes no difference but the 1275 slave is a bigger bore than the frog one Hence the pedal will be softer but move the slave cylinder slightly less. Assuming The master cylinder is 3/4" which is the same as the 1275, it should be OK. Check for wear on all the clevis pins. The frog clutch pedal does have a stop on it whereas the 1275 if i recall does not so this may limit pedal travel and ability to disengage

Thanks everyone for your advice.

The MC is the disc brake type and I have bought the adaptor which screws into the MC in place of the pipe union. I've ordered the 1275 pipe from a LHD car as I hope it is longer by enough to put a couple of turns around an aerosol can. I will then screw the bigger unions straight into the slave cylinder and MC adaptor and it should all be ok.

The clevis pin at the slave end is new as is the fork (another big cause of AGRO which I won't bore you all with).

I'll check the clutch pedal end of things when I get the engine going and hopefully it will be ok bar a little adjustment.
