MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Clutch Replacement '69 Sprite
I will be assisting a young friend with a clutch replacement for his 1969 Sprite this weekend. In the past I've removed both engine, and gearbox as one unit on our midget. Is their any real time savings by removing the engine only to perform this task. Pros, and cons anyone? Regards, Larry C. |

I have done it both ways....it a matter of perferance, I perfer the engine and tranny as a unit.... the benifit being its extremely easy to connect the 2 back up while both are out, for some reason, it takes me a while and alot of frustration to get the engine and tranny to mate back up in the the engine bay....but you do have to disconnect the drive shaft at the rear axle...so its all realitive in the end. serously I think this question is in the same vain as coke vs pepsi, or Mg vs. Triumph. I go for only the engine every time. I reckon it is at least 2 hours quicker and that engaging the 1st motion shaft into the clutch & flyweel spigot is a doddle compared with dealing with that inaccesible propshaft spline! But then there's my tendency to forget, at least 50% of occasions, to drain the gearbox oil, so there's that to clean up too. Not everyone else is such a slow learner! |

Thanks to all, Just over four hours engine in, and out. Gearbox stayed in place. Front radiator shroud, and motor mounts a challenge. Found the fifteen year old release bearing had disintegrated, and replaced all. Young lad was a good hard worker, and appreciates what he has. Wanted to learn about his car, and so he did most of this himself. Perhaps started another one on a lifetime of Spridgets? Regards, L.C. |

Good to hear that all went well. I have found that there are a lot of people who are eager to work on their cars but are nervous about it. The old "What if I...." syndrome and if someone like you is around to be the technical adviser they feel better about digging in because they know that help is right over their shoulder. Keeps their enthusiasm going and builds confidence. Martin |
