MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Clutch slave cylinder
948cc Mk2 Sprite converted to disc brakes. 3/4” master cylinder fitted, do I retain the standard 7/8” clutch slave cylinder? Is clutch lever travel reduced? Thanks Les |
Les Robinson |
I guess marginally but it should be fine. The later 1098 engines with the 3/4 master had the same set up. |

Did the master cylinder bore size change for both clutch and brake, or just the brake cylinder? |

Both clutch and brake are 3/4” in the master cylinder. As clutch stroke reduces then will pedal force increase? |
Les Robinson |
The 948 and the 1098 had the same slave cylinder. The 1275 had a larger diameter slave but the same bore master albeit seperate rather than combined cylinders The travel of the slave pushrod will be slightly less for the same amount of clutch pedal movement. I don't think you will notice much difference in pedal pressure perhaps marginally harder. |

But aren’t the clutch lever length ratio’s different? |
Les Robinson |
Les What clutch and gearbox do you have fitted? Cheers Mike |
M Wood |
The gearbox is Type 9 5-speed, however I adapted a standard 948 bell housing to fit, so all clutch components are standard 948. So basically a standard set up. Did this years ago and at the time fitted a generic Girling 3/4” slave cylinder so it matched the master thus giving standard lever movement. The Girling cylinder is aluminium and not particularly durable, have had problems with weeping seals and never feel too confident with it. |
