MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Coil question?

Quick coil question... We have just taken a suspect one off teh midget and it seems to be full of liquid. Is that normal or is that the reason it is not doing it's job?

should be oil if it is inside the coil

if its brandy, wine, beer or vodka, no it shouldn't be in there

nor water!
Bill

Cheers Bill Steve and I thought we had found the problem straight away! Although we have been out for drive in the Midget with a new coil and no stalling at all, then the call of the local was to much to resist!

Generally speaking, anytime that you can TELL there is fluid in the coil, you need a new coil ;-)

Cheers David. The car seems fine with a new coil.

be care full with the liquid i seem to recal it is nasty stuf with almost the same efects on paint as brake fluid

Some may remember that I had a "minor explosion" a little while ago which was all the oil coming out of my coil. I bought a replacement but haven't fitted it yet as the car seems quite happy running on the old coil, now without any oil in it. I thought it would burn out

The spare is in the boot, as no doubt one day it will be needed, but for now the car has done about 600 miles on the "dry" coil.

Guy:

Have you checked the (oil-free) coil after a drive for temperature? I'm thinking the oil is for heat dissipation. Just guessing.

Richard,
yes I have, and it remains cool. You are right, the oil is for heat dissipation. Presumably without oil the heat is not being transferred to the casing which is why it is remaining cool. So far at least the thing has continued working despite this. I think it is malevolently waiting for a suitably inconvenient moment to expire!
