MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Coolant volume

Over the winter I have replaced the radiator and hoses in the midget(1275 RWA 1974 - Cross Flow Radiator). The Haynes manual say with a heater the system needs 3.4 Liters of 6 imp pints of coolant. I have seen some threads on the forum that state that the volume is anything between 4.5 and 5.97 Litres (10.5 Pints). Can anyone give me the definitive answer. Just want to get the write mix of antifreeze to water in it for Spring. Many Thanks. Andy

I have a handy list from Spridgebits many years ago that states:

948/1098/1275 vert flow= 10 pints=12 pints US= 5.7ltr
1275 cross flow= 6 pints=7 pints US= 3.4 ltr
1500 = 7.5 pints=9 pints US= 4.3 ltr
1500 (USA models)= 9.5 pints=11.4 pints US= 5.4ltr

might be worh sticking this in the Wiki if it isnt already

I'll look.

Usaually a good mix of coolent to water is 50/50, if you go higher on the coolent it will run hotter (IMHO)

I know a USA gallon of antifreese before mixing 50/50 is more then enough for me I have a cross flow with 1275.

Also when you put the coolent in, leave the engine run with the rad. cap off for about 20-30 minutes at idle in order to get the air bubbles in the system worked out.

if your using the screw down hose clamps, remember to re-tighten them in about 300 miles, other wise it will leak when the rubber hoses start to relax.
