MG Midget and Sprite Technical - cooling
yep cooling and for a change not to little but to mutch! rebuild 1380 no bypass vertical flow rad 88degree thermostat with one 5mm hole drilled in the side to let some flow through and it is not getting warm it always stays below 70 but most of the time below 50 temp sender could be off but it did function with the old head and engine (with bypass) and it got up to 90 then could the hole in the thermostat be to smal not letting enough flow through and thus not getting hot water to the sender? or is it just a cool engine |

onno, the hole should only prevent an overshoot in temp. Thats why the little thingy is in most thermostats I think. I happen to have one without thingy and temp went till "N" on the gauge before settling at the "A" from wAter. Later I drilled a little hole in it and now temp doesn't overshoot. So with hole(s) it will take a little longer to reach normal temp I think. |

Onno, My first thought would be to use/borrow an infrared thermometer with laser to pinpoint more accurate readings at the radiator, sending unit and thermostat housing. Second, re-test the thermostat to determine the actual opening point. Regards, Larry C. |
