MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Creaking wire wheels
The two wire wheels on the rear of my MkIII midget creak when I move the car. Loose spokes? Any fix? Thanks. |

Good try David. Wrong car! Got knock on minilites on that one!! lol |

Neil. First, jack up the car and test the wheels for loose spokes. Often, you can move them slightly with the fingers if you are hearing a creaking noise when rolling. If you find loose spokes, you can either try to tighten them (articles on the web on how to do this properly) or you can have them rebuilt. With older wheels, the cost of a rebuild can be very close to the cost of a new wire wheel. And, with new wire wheels, you can expect the spokes to last a longer time than older, often overworked, spokes. But, the first step is to determine if the wheels actually do have loose spokes, followed by determining as closely as possible the age and condition of the wheels, then, make a decision as to how best handle what you find. OK is it a creak or a click? A click is usually worn splines... |

Hi David, it's a creaking sound. A clonking sound I have had in the past is usually remedied by a tightening of the spinners. Neil |

Hi, I found cleaning down the splines and the wheel then applying copper grease to the spline silenced mine up when they were clonking and creaking. Cheers, John |
