MG Midget and Sprite Technical - cylinder head

hi right it all started when my 68 sprite overheated one day since then it is down on power also the car sounds like the exhaust is blowing but i have inspected the exhaust and it in good order i have also carried out a compression test and these are the results number one cyl 135 number two cyl 115 number three cyl 95 and no four cyl 125 am i right in thinking i may require at least a head gasket or maybe a recon cylinder head if i do require a cylinder head what parts am i better replacing when doing this work

Well, again, this could lead to a can of worms, however, assuming the rest of the engine is good, I would take the head straight to a reputable engineering shop and ask them to replace the guides, fit hardened seats and a set of 214N valves, I would also suggest a new set of valve springs too. Finally if you want a little more C/R then .025" off the head face will not go a miss.

Clean the block face an reassemble using new gaskets and renew the bypass hose with a length of 1/2" heater hose and new clips and you should be good again.

Hope all goes well and don't hesitate to ask any further questions if you need more help.

I overheated an engine once (Volvo B20) and it lead to a deterioration of the head gasket and loss of compression between cyl's 2 and 3. It turned out that no head work was necessary as there was no warpage. SImply replacing the gasket, which showed definite signs of head gasket burning between 2 and 3, was sufficient to remedy the problem. When you have the head off, make sure to have it checked for warpage. Aluminum heads are much, much more sensitive to this condition.

Arnt we getting fancy with the titles ?, lol...should I refer to you as Sir Mr. Boldry or just your lordship....8 ^ ) lol.

I agree with "His Lordship" take it in and have it looked over esp. for cracks....common between the valves...not vary expensive but will save you a fortunes in loot and time if there is a deeper problem and you slap it back togather

Prop,

I put that on some of my threads now and again, as I hold that position in the MGCC, it doesn't make me any better than the next man and my answers are just opinion and not nessaceraly fact, although I do have over 30 years hands on experience with our little cars..
