MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Cylinder head identification
My 1275 has BL2 stamped on the head near the thermostat. I was told that my head was a metro head but am not so sure. Anybody have these numbers on theirs or recognise the numbers? |

I have tried to take a photo but with no luck It is hard to see and it doesn't come out on the photo |

Just a photo of the head might give us a clue as to whether it's a Metro head or not. |

As we're on the subject, mine is stamped 12G1805, any ideas? |

I read an artical on this, just several weeks ago....And I'm going strictly from memory..... But the 12G1805 was the original 11 stud head for the 1st 1275 mini cooper S, and was eventually replaced by the (12G960????...I dont thisk those numbers are right) which is the same head as the 12G1316 used in USA with smog ports....I think the 12G1805 was always an 11 stud head, and never a nine stud... Again, don't quote me writing any books, I could certainly be wrong. Prop |

Well, my 12G1805 is a 11 stud head. It came from the engine I had in my MG1300, but wasn't the original for that car. It was said to be a 1275GT engine. |

I don't have Vizzard to hand, but mine was the early head with the big valves. |

Here is the artical I was refering to. Brad, I think the Aeg163 was orinaly intended for to 1071, according to the artical. from 1963-69 It really is a good artical if you want to have a better understanding of Cly. heads, well worth the read. AFAIK The AEG163 was fitted to early 1275 Ss. The later Mk3 S had an 11-stud version of the 12G940 which was stamped 12G1805 near the thermostat housing. This head was also fitted to 'performance' versions of the FWD 1300 - 1300GT, MG1300 and Riley kestrel. |

Beat me to it Dave.... lol The AEG163 is a superb head IF you can find one that isn't cracked...! The 12G1805 is also a desirable head having the larger valve sizes as standard, but any 12G940 can be brought to the same spec with a little work. Again, beware of cracks. Mark. |

Nobody (almost then) ever mentions the riley's, why is that? where they associated with old people or something like that? Maybe it's a dutch thing and are they more popular in GB? |

I don't know, it's a bit of a mystery. There never seemed to be that many Rileys on the road, but there were many more Wolseleys. The Wolseley 1300 essentially had the transverse equivalent of the midget engine - 8.8:1 compression and 9-stud head (65BHP), whereas the Riley had the 9.75:1 big valve head - 70BHP IIRC. |
