MG Midget and Sprite Technical - de-bumpered indicators

hi, just bought a midget 1500 and like the de-bumpered look and was wondering if i could get 2 indicator units to fit in the hole in a 1500 wing or i need to put a small patch in and make the wing fit an indicator unit.

Hey chris,

Both options are possible, if you take the original indicator units out of the bumpers they will completely fill the holes in the wing, to fix them in place, feed the wires and rear of lamp unit through the wing then screw through the original screw fixing points in the lense into an apropriate sized piece of metal plate(approx 2" square plate per screw) This will sandwich the wing between the lense and the piece of plate, holding the indicator unit firmly in place.

The second option is to patch. Obviously to properly do, means cutting & shaping a piece of plate, welding, filling, and painting. Time consuming and/or expensive for most people, but a perfect job. To avoid the welding I suppose you could fibreglass but this still requires paint work

A much cheaper and easier method I used previously was to cut a couple of sections of alloy mesh to fill the gaps, rivet it in place, then indicator units can be attached to this, I personally bought a pair of mini indicators from ebay for a few pounds. I have attached a pic, sorry for the poor quality but you should get the idea!

Depends on your level of skill, level of value of the vehicle and personal taste as to which route to take, I have now changed to a 1 piece fibreglass front end but have kept the mini indicators. I can add a pic of the 1500 indicators straight into the wing on friday if you need it.

Hope this is useful

Mine is a debumpered one also.
I also used the Mini/Frogeye lamps after the hole of the indicators were filled with a metal insert. You can customize everything to your own taste.

Rolf

chris...glad you started this thread, I've been wondering about the lights...been considering de-bumpering my '78.

Like Rolf i also debumperd my 1975 midget and was lucky enough to find 2 rotten 1275 wings where i could cut out the indicator bits which were then welded in my 1500 wings.
As i kinda crashed my front at that time i had to respray anyway.

Here is a pic of the 1500 indicators in place on a be bumpered 1500

and from behind!

Simple cheap and effective, like I said, really depends on personal skill, taste and depth of pockets ;)

Hope this helps

Arie, I guess you did some electrical upgrades to support all those lights? :)
C L Zeni

He even had to upgrade his engine to supply those power suckers.

I know its a pain to wash/scrape dead flies from the grill but hey Arie thats an expensive way to prevent that:-)
