MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Declutching stalls engine

I have finally got the midget on the road following an engine rebuild. I have since had to fit a new starter after being carted home courtesy of the AA and then my head gasket leaked. That seems to be OK now but the car stalls at junctions when I declutch. in neutral with clutch disengaged the engine runs at 900/1000 rpm. If I press the clutch it stalls. If i keep it going using the throttle I can feel a vibration through the car and through the clutch pedal. I replaced clutch plate and thrust bearing. Pressure plate looked OK. Engine had new pistons, rings, big end bearings and thrust bearings. Any ideas? Cheers. Walter

yup, it sounds like you've got a release bearing problem, or thrust washer problem, irrespective of you recently changing them.

Using something like a tyre lever or flat bar, lever against the chassis and crankshaft pulley to ensure that the pulley is pressed as far back as it will go. Then get someone to press the clutch pedal down whilst you look and feel for any forward movement of the front pulley. This will indicate if the crankshaft thrust shims are worn - or even missing!
