MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Diff Oil Top up general question
Hi All. Just a quick query- is there an easy way of topping up diff oil...I only managed to get about 900 mls in my diff as the Comma Oils bottle would not compress any further as I was squeezing the oil in. Cheers colin |

You need one of these. It's like a giant syringe. About £10 off ebay. Robert |

Do you get Nulon oils there----You can get their gear oils in a soft squeezy bag here--just screw the supplied hose onto the bag and squoosh it -you can refill them with whatever oil you use for next time.

That Silverline giant syringe is fantastically useful for all sorts of things. I keep one to empty the water feature in the garden before the frosts arrive. I've never seen Nulon oils over here Willy. |

Another vote for Roberts Silverline giant syringe which I use for re filling the diff and gearbox on a 1500 also emptying brake fluid from the clutch & brake master cylinders but hopefully never again and numerous other tasks around the house, a nice cheap useful addition to the garage. Tim |

That looks very useful. I'll get one of those too. |

You can also buy large clear plastic syringes (IIRC use a 500ml, but can even get 1 litre) from agricultural supply stores - e,g, McCaskie’s at Ayr Livestock Market - and then use a bit of clear tubing on the end. Either that or find an old Castrol EP90 squeezy bottle with built in tube.
I keep a ‘clean oil job’ version of such a syringe and tube for filling diffs and lever arm dampers with fresh oil in situ and a ‘dirty’ version for draining lever damper reservoirs of old oil and the combined master cylinder of old hydraulic fluid. Cheers Mike |

I have 2 or 3 old Castrol EP90 plastic bottles with tubes that I use for the diff and gearbox oils. |

The Silverline syringe in the image I posted also proved to be an effective vacuum brake bleeder. When I converted my Mk2 Sprite to discs I needed to bleed the new calipers but my Eezi-bleed was full of silicone fluid for our Frogeye and I didn't want to use it on the Mk2 because it used DOT4. So, I searched about the garage and garden shed for suitable silicone pipe to get a good seal on the brake nipple and on the pipe fitted to the Silverline.
It worked a treat. It took less than 10 mins to do both sides and I had a perfect brake pedal. Rob |
