MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Door Card issue !!

On my newly restored Mk 2 midget, the doors shut nicely without the door cards in place, look pretty well lined up with the rest of the bodywork, and the gaps are pretty good.
However, once the door cards are in place, the doors do not want to close, and will only shut if slammed hard, whereupon the doors are noticeably proud of the sills, more so at the rear than the front of the doors.
Can anyone suggest what the problem is, and how to fix it, please ?
Could it have something to do with use of much later doors on a restored Mk 2 bodyshell ? The original doors were really bad & I ditched them. Bad mistake ?
Very frustrated at present !!!
Thanks.

Possibly it has the wrong rubber door seal fitted. The proper Midget version of the stuff is slightly slimmer than the seal used on many other cars employing what appears to be the same type. Either that, or it is the positioning of the door cards which when correctly fitted should close within the line of the door seal, not onto it.

My vote is for the rubbers.

Just to say thanks again for advice given, and to say that I was able to peel back the vinyl/foam padding, and trim down the appropriate section of the ply, then reattach the coverings. This resulted in the card fitting inside the seal, where it not done so before, and solved the problem.

Just to throw my two Penerth in. I finished my interior at the beginning of this year, had exactly the same problem. My kit came from moss. The drivers side was worse. Getting the card under the capping & fitting over the lock/handle plate was a complete B. As you say, a good slam to shut the doors. However, once they're shut, which they are most of the time, the material compresses. They now shut perfectly.
