MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Door check straps
Just a small thing, but it may help out someone in the future. I went to fit my newly refurbished doors on my Mk 2 midget yesterday. Like an idiot, I hadn't fitted the check straps before putting the window winder mechanisms back in ! Solved the problem by putting some electrical wire through the two holes on the bodyshell end of each strap, then feeding these through the aperture and pulling the check strap through. Worked a treat and stopped me getting very angry at my own stupidity. Only problem was, it was my missus who suggested the wire idea !! Cost me a meal and some wine down our local pub. Worth it though. |

Just the other day I put the check straps in my MKII with the window winders in place. If you look at the metal piece at the end of the strap (the part that forms the T which goes inside of the door) you will see that it only has one rivet holding it in place. That allows the metal piece to twist to about a 45 degree angle to the strap body which allows it to be pushed into the slot from the outside. Once inside the door, pull on the strap and the metal stop will go back to its original position forming a T to keep it from pulling out. Works like a champ. |
