MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Door glass outer seals - help!!!
An old chestnut, I know. Having trawled the Archive and tried all I can to fit the two outer seals onto the doors of my Mk 2 midget, I have failed miserably. So much so, in fact, that I am now thoroughly depressed and cannot face the bl***y job any more! Anyone out there live within easy striking distance of Exeter, Devon and fancy having a go at it for me please?? I am happy to pay good money, in cash, alcohol or whatever your particular pleasure. It will be worth it! A chance to be my friend for life. How can you pass up an opportunity like that?! Myles |

Have you bought/made the tool to fit the clips? |

Yeah not a fun job. I made a tool like Daves, it was pretty rubbish though and only really suitable for holding the clip whilst I pushed them on with a really hard thumb push! Malcolm |

When I did mine I found the clips supplied were too tightly folded to 'get a start' over the door/seal and benefited from being slightly opened with a flat bladed screwdriver before being fitted. They were also dunked in waxoyle - not sure if that helped or hindered ! R. |

I bought the tool from Moss Europe. It is not much use, frankly. Very 'bendy' as you try to pull the clips up with it. I wonder if I am doing it wrong here. I have built up the doors, glass in etc, and got the inner fuzzy seals on no problem. The glass doesn't really go down far enough to make it easy to get the tool in. Should I have tried to fit the outer seals before bolting up the winder mechanism etc which may let the glass drop down to the bottom and thus allow more room to manoeuvre ? I opened up the clips, but maybe too far as I did get one on, only for it to fall off again as I tried to put the second clip on. Like I said, this job has got to me. |

Outer seal is the last job to do. I made my own tool and it seemed to work well. It isn't easy to get the tool in. You have to pu tit in at the back of the door, where the glass is curved, then drag it along to where it needs to be. Maybe you need to try another job on the car, then go back to this and it will all fall into place. |

Thanks Dave. You could be right !!! |

Hi Myles, a tricky job. I bent a steel bracket at one end to lightly hold the clip, the other end had a 'T' to pull on. To gain a little extra space, you could remove the lower window bump stops, that may give you a bit more fiddle room. Yes you have to work the tool and clip along from the back of the door. Good luck |

Just did that job recently with my buddy Mackay... You need the tool and buy lots of extra clips! |

Hi You are absolutely right. This is a b****r of a job. For me getting the correct clips is ESSENTIAL. Woolies do the correct ones. Importantly they include a small semicircular projection on one side of the clip that helps guide the clip into place. I used these with the bent metal device that people suggest for installing these blighters and they went right on. All other clips pinged all over the shop or simply fell off in use. Tim |

I'm filled with doom & gloom. I bought new seals, clips & the tool just the week before last. Haven't got round to replacing them yet. Next weekend! Just out of interest, how do you get the old ones out. Cheers |

Dave, I fitted the outer weather strip on after loosely putting in the quarter light - more room before inserting the glass - felt internal strip fitted last. There is a good write up in Peter Birkins book 'A Midget Reborn' about fitting up doors. Steve Clark did a write up using some of the text - dated 15 April 2004 I have a hard copy - but still unable to find in the Archive ! R. |

Finally found Steve's post Either search :- quarterlight/side glass/window winder install or roast pork and select 'this phrase' - don't ask ! R. |
