MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Door striker dilemma

MK1 Sprite - door strikers.
Should the conical pins that fix to the door frame be painted? It seems a bit odd as any paint on the conical bit will get damaged as the door latches, and paint on the base will also damage when the mounting screws are adjusted. And yet they are steel so will rust if not protected.
Did the originals have the conical part with some sort of plated finish?

I'd guess the parts were originally zinc (clear) passivated. But you could call the guys at A H Spares to get clarification.

f pollock

That one looks plated.
The Moss ones don't. There's no remnants of plating on any part of my originals, but they are worn anyway.

A thin smear of grease should be enough to keep the rust away?

Mine have been on for a year now, and there isn't a speck of rust. They were the old ones, and I buffed them up a bit - that was all.
I know at least one of them is rust-free all over, because I've had it off this morning to be put in the vice and hammered over a sixteenth to make it latch more easily.
Nick and Cherry Scoop

Guy, could you brush paint them with the Rustoleum combi you've used, then touch them in from time to time?

Guy

Sounds like you may need a new project car as must be running out of jobs...

LOL Not quite yet Mike. The other car is now in need of some love and attention !

And the 'to do' list is just as long as it ever was. The only thing is now instead of single items such as rebuild bonnet, it has things like source door strikers.
GuyW

Guy, the originals on mine look like they were lightly plated. The new ones from Moss are plated with what I guess is zinc and look very nice. Unfortunately they don't fit!! The taper latch is too large a diameter so they don't go into the latch. I spent ages wondering why my doors would only go on the first latch until I tried the old ones and they clicked shut perfectly. I just buffed them up and will probably oil them to stop rusting.

Excellent little article Dominic, exactly what I found with the midget ones which look very similar. So it looks like Brown and Gammons are better but not perfect.

I'll probably reinstate my home plating kit and zinc plate the old ones.

Your article will be printed off and sent to Moss when I return their useless ones!

Thanks for posting

Mine were plated originally like Nick's. I polished mine up and they have remained that way for a number of years now.
