MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Dynamo Pulley Size
Hello Everyone 69 midget 1275 Negative Earth. After lots of head scratching and help from this board I have just solved my lack of charging by fitting a new regulator box. During my investigation I realised my dynamo pulley was smaller than normal, about 3 inch effective diameter. Why this is I cannot remember but it must be down to me as I fitted a rebuilt dynamo 5 or 6 years ago. I can only guess is that's the way it came and I couldn't get the pulley off to change it! The car only did about 1500 / 2000 miles per annum and was then not used for 2 years. I recommisioned it last year and the charging failed either at the end of last summer or when I started using the car in the early Spring. Two questions; is the smaller diameter pulley likely to cause problems - did it possibly cause the regulatoor failure (probably the original from '69)? And what actually fails with the regulator? It looks to be pretty "solid state". Now I am up and running again weather forecast is not good. However, I will hopefully be going out, whatever the weather, for the hell of it. Thanks for any help. Ray, The dynamo from my 1972 1275 midget has a 3 & 5/8" diameter pulley, as far as I know it's a standard dynamo. Alan. |

Thanks Alan. I think mine is slightly smaller than that but I seem to remember the previous one was much larger. When the previous dynamo failed I realised the pulley was slightly buckled. It may still be "buried" in the garage so I will try to locate it just to find its exact size. In the meantime I will assume the size of the one fitted will not cause a problem. Ray |
