MG Midget and Sprite Technical - egr valve

hello all i just baught a 1976 mg midget had it 2 weeks now runs great but at idle runs rough i noticed the egr light is on would this make car idle rough i will be getting shop manual soon but always nice to ask ? when need to lol thank you

Probably best to take the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculating) valve out of the system.

Mark.

mark thank you for the advice ill do that and get back too you again thank you
van

Van den roosters?
Must dutch blood running thrue your vains?
Hmmm, could also be Belgium...

If no longer wanted by law do like mark says and get rid of the egr and all the exces stuf and it gives BHP back to the engine.
That special enviromental stuff only slows the engine down.

good luck!

As far as I know, the EGR light is turned on by a simple mileage counter, and not by a sensor of any kind. I think the counter was integrated with the speedo cable, up in the engine bay somewhere. If you can find that counter, I think there's a way to reset it. Not sure, sorry, as my '78 wasn't fitted with the counter, etc.

Cheers,

It was attached to the pedalbox on my 1975 midget.

thanks all will be working on it this week end as we still have a couple of months before this snow hits oh and my out law days are all over with im getting to old to out run cops any more and the mg just not fast enough lol cant get away from them v-8 lol

Van, there is a counter up by the speedometer cable under the hood. It can be reset by a special key (easy to make) that has 2 prongs on it. If you reset the counter to 00000 it will turn the light off.

Alternately, you can remove the bulb from the console or disconnect the electrical leads. Follow the wire in from where it passs through the dash. I'm not sure if it is accessable from under the dash or behind the console area.

All that counter was for was to alert the driver the EGR valve needs servicing.

clive thank you i will do that then need to find out why she running so rough at idle that seems to be the only problem with car is rough idle and egr light
van

Van, what is the idle speed you have the car set at now? I think it is supposed to be 800 to 900 but that's off the top of my head.

All your vacuum lines are good and connected? Timing and fuel mixture is set right?
Clive Reddin

hi clive all hoses seem to be in good shape idle set at 900 rpm i took plugs out they are black and dry and not wet was thinking maybe rgr was stuck open a bit at idle but it was closed pcv valve working dont know much about timming till i get the book dont sound like timming retarded
