MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Electronic ignition?
Are these any good? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310223464354&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT Seems like a cheap way to be rid of points ignition, if it works. |

yes they are very good. The types that use an external module are older technology and were more expensive to produce. I have one fitted to my midget and one in the GT. |

I have one of those kits on my BGT, works every bit as good as the pertronix systems I've used on previous cars. So far done 12,000 miles without a hitch. Electronic ignition make a world of difference over points. Well worth it. |

Thanks for that, I'll press some buttons and empty my account a bit more! |

Take a look at the thread 'Simonbbc electronic ignition' of a few weeks ago Regards JohnT |

But do be very carefull with the wires, the insulation splits very easily. I had mine fitted and removed a it again a day later to change the springs and on the black wire the insulation had split, just outside of the grommet |

for about a pound its worth covering the wires with heat shrink |

are these the same units http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-4-CYL-PET-ELECTRONIC-IGNITION-KIT-/110509681305?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19bae3ea99 and http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Electronic-Ignition-Kit-45D-Lucas-MG-Midget-1500cc-/110523999911?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19bbbe66a7 |

I used the Britpart kit on my 1500 no problems at all and at about £18 all in, very well worth doing. It definitely smooths out the engine especially at higher revs as no 'points bounce'. I bought mine from this supplier. See link below: http://www.mm-4x4.com/britpart-electronic-conversion-kit-2720-p.asp Steve Lowiss. |

Mark - They certainly look the same, I guess they think us MG owners can afford more than the Landrover Defender drivers, though I suppose if they could afford more they'd buy a 'proper' Landrover. Steve - I had problems with the 'blue' unit when I fitted one to my MGB, after a short while the engine lost power when it got warm. I've had no problems with the 'red' module that replaced it on SimonBBC's catalogue. How long have you used the blue module for? Mike |
Mike |
Reply to Mike; The one I received from them was the Red Module and no problems to date. Steve Lowiss |

As my old Granddad used to say: "you get what you pay for". I've been using Pertronix Ignitor modules for years, a little more expensive than these recent alternatives, but I've never had one fail in 20+ years of use! I just install them & forget them... The choice is yours...'nough said. Dave ;) |

"You get what you pay for" So if you buy the same unit on eBay for twice the price then it will be twice as reliable? |
Mike |
Of course not...re-read my post! I said I've been using Pertronix for years with no failures, there are now some cheaper alternatives on the market, but I don't think I'd trust them. I, personally don't want to be sitting on the side of the road, when I should be driving. These newer (cheaper) versions may be just as good, I don't know, but I'll stick to what I know works. Each to his own... |

Hey, Mr. Mee - just wanted to add a mention here (as I just did on your other thread) that once you've fitted one of these electronic triggers, you'll probably need to reset your timing. Been there myself when I installed a PerTronix; the triggering point is different on the electronic pickup than it was with the points. Cheers, -:G:- |
