MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Emission controls 1500

hi all looking for some advise on the 1500 "breathing system". I have replaced my SU carbs with twin weber 40 DCOE's to finish off its modification all the usual's done , head, cam, exhaust etc but at a loss as to where the breather pipe from the rocker (alloy) goes to has there is nowhere to connect like the SU's.

Do/can you tap the manifold or air filters (have already done this for the new brake servo) or can I just vent to air with a suitable filter or should I be doing something else? Any info greatly excepted.

Hi, I see no one has responded so I will try to help.

The rocker cover breather is a bit of a misnomer. Its really there to scavenge the inevitable fumes from this engines crank case. The SU's work on a vacuum basis so they scavenge the gases hence the breather into the carbs and back into combustion and mostly out of the exhaust. IMO you will not be able to remove these gases and keep crank case pressure low and therefore oil leaks low if you simply put a breather cap on. So you may have to consider something like a scavenging kit.

There must be someone who has done this on this site. Our American friends have a lot of 1500's so it may be that one of them will pick this up.

The other alternative is to look at a triumph site where lots of 1500 development work goes on.

Anyway this is back at the top of the list now so hopefully someone will add detail to my vagueness soon.

Dave thanks for the reply your vagueness is 100% better then my knowledge on this subject and it has now has given me some leads to follow. I did see a picture of the breather pipe connected to the weber air filter but this was a single 45 set up. I will also investigate a scavenge kit. Thanks - Steve

Deb Evans once stated that the Triumph engine doesn't suffer from excessive crankcase pressure, as the A-series does.

I would assume that you could just put a filter on it, or feed it into a catch tank.
