MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Engaging gear
Chaps This is a bit of a liberty, but having difficulty engaging gear - first or reverse - from standstill or idle in my BMW 1 series. It is very "notchy" and is some way from being just a trait of the box. The reason I post here is that the hydraulic system employed is very similar to the midget, and thus any solutions may be similar. The first thing that springs to mind is to bleed the system - the second to change the slave out, the third to check the master - but then what? Changing gear is fine on the move - no drag, no vicous bite.... |

Isn't google wonderful! Nice that someone with access to SIBs has posted the definitive answer. |

Fully synthetic oil may help, especially if the problem is worse when everything's cold. |

If the pedal is high and the clutch seems to be disengaging properly, I would suspect the pilot bushing/bearing. If the clutch is disengaging with the pedal close to the floor, and there is a sign of fluid loss, it may be hydraulics. In the Midget, the clevis pins wear and this takes a large portion of the pedal stroke to disengage the clutch. Check all linkage points for wear. |
