MG Midget and Sprite Technical - engine pressure+airfilers?
Hi guys! i just fitted new pancake air filters on the 72 and also replaced the the braided metal hose from carb to carb! But since doing it my engine pressure is higher than before, at idle it was 40 and now at idle its 50 but seems to jump and flicker to 55/60/50? can airfilters cause this? oh and the pipe from carb to carb also seemed to be a narrower than the one already on? thanks. |

Sorry to ask the obvious but it's not just that the idle speed is a bit higher with the new filters is it? Bob |

Steve post a photo did you just fit filter and hose or do you fit or do anyhting else at the same time? accelorator cable isn't tighter than before is it again a photo might show this oil pressure may or may not be related |

hi guys! i only changed the air filters and hose; and the idle speed is still at 800rpm as was before. i'll go do a pic. |

Steve check your g/box consol carpet for oil or behind dash |
Nigel At |
The red highlight is the old hose layed nenx to the new one! oh and the other highlighted hose needs replacing but when the new one came it was a copper pipe is that right? |
s j knox |
hi nigel, do you mean oil on carpet dripping from dash cant see any oil! |
s j knox |
I mean the g/box consol carpet that lifts out, oil dripping from the union to the oil gauge when the the oil gauge flickers does the idle change at all? if there's oil dripping on the carpet you'll know when you put your hand on it I'm a bit suprised you swapped like for like on those filters are they foam under the grid water hose should be pipe yes but all the suppliers have the wrong one for our models and it's wrongly sold as being correct I know I was trying to get some correct ones made |
Nigel At |
hey nigle! no oil dripping anywhere and when it flickers the idle stays the same. the filters have foam in them and aint the best, but i had on the original airfilters with the 2 air intakes; think i prefer them to be honest! as for the water hose where do i buy a hose like the one on the car? Could those airfiters be to thin? putting strain on the engine. |

Ah....i got a set of those.... they creat alot of extra restriction, making the air race faster unto the intakes....i never was a fan of the foam filter....id be tempted to find a real filter Prop |

yeah I got confused you had the saucepan type original filter then must be someone else that has those filters but old and dulled a bit I don't think they do you any favours but they certainly wont flick the oil pressure personally I like fit and forget K&N air filters (clean and recharge after 50,000 miles in normal use) the water hose unless it's getting in the way I'd leave alone unless perhaps the oil pipe to the oil gauge is twisted or strained or worn'gunked on the inside I can only think it could be that or the gauge - beyond me start a new thread called something like oil gauge flickers and take a photo of the oil pipe that comes from the engine to the gauge see if it changes type on route flash will be required if it's black on black, or lighten the phot |

I hate to bring this up, and seriously hope you dont have to share my experiance But just before my old engines crankshaft completely busted in half at the rear main location....the oil pressure also flickered around exactly like that for about 300 miles,,,,until...BANG, Prop |

I'm sure it's just the angle of the photo but the front carb looks bigger than the rear! |
Gary & Gaps |
hey gary yep thats just the angle of photo! |
s j knox |
so what's the oil pressure situation then Steve? |
