MG Midget and Sprite Technical - exhaust header... what to expect fitting?

My big christmas pressie is a pacesetter exhaust header, which I was really pleased to get. I will be installing it to my 73 midget 1275 engine, what fitting issues should i be expecting to address? I have a stainless steel exhaust system for the back end, but i forget the brand. there is a clamped joint in my current exhaust that should line up with the header extension pipe.

the pacesetter header is in two pieces, but i am unclear in how they should be held together, since there is no flange to join them...

Can't help with the 2 bits fitment, but as far as the port matching goes, check out this website for an overview of what's involved:

You may have to clearance the webbing where the pipes go through by the chassis. Not a big deal.

What shawn says is possibly true. I had to cut some sheetmetal before my maniflow LCB would go in. However, yours is in two pieces so that should make it easier. Exhaust port matching may be needed, but on a tubular steel system you cant remove much material, so be careful.

Anyhow, I found a picture of this header (or at least for a 1500) in the victoria british catalogue. It looks to me like the header terminates in a collector and then has a detachable extension. If I understand correctly, you are used to the stock system where there is a flange at the base of the manifold with three studs that matches with a flange on the exhaust system. Normally you stick a "doughnut" in there and tighten up the nuts to get a good seal, right?

These work a little different. Have you by any chance tried to slip the extension OVER the bottom of the collector end? More often than not these performance systems are held together with exhaust clamps of some sort. Maniflow manifolds come with clamps that look like the ones in the picture. Moss sells some that are similar but have a slightly different design (part numbers 412-025 through 412-030).

Masically you need to find out the outer diameter of the pipe you need to clamp and buy the apropriate clamp. The next thing you need to worry about is wether your stainless system is the right size. Typically, it should join up to the extension more or less the same way as the extension joins the collector. I am guessing that this means you will need to somehow streatch the stainless steel pipe to fit over the extension. Or if it fits snugly inside the extension, you might be able to join them with a clamp that way (just cut a small slot in the extension pipe first.

However, keep in mind that you may be better off if you get an exhaust system that has the same diameter as the extension pipe, and a free flow muffler
