MG Midget and Sprite Technical - exhaust manifold
Hello, are the standard exhaust manifold the same for all the A serie midget. I have one from a 948cc. Is it possible to put it on a 1275cc engine? Laurent |

A 948 manifold will not flow very well on a 1275 and I'm fairly sure it won't fit a 1275 downpipe, either. |

Thank you Dave. |

That reminds me - I have a nice 948 manifold that came off Cherry's Derrington engine. Not big bore, but rather historic (does anybody recognize it?). |
Nick |
OOoops - forgot the picture.
|
Nick |
And the other side. I don't suppose anybody will be interested, because we tend to go for performance, don't we? |
Nick |
I do recognise it and I think it may have offered me sweets when I was a child. By the way, that's a very curved radiator. |

A nice bit of welding from someone back in the day. Prop |

lucky Nick , having a radiator in your garage |
David Cox |
That looks remarkably like a Speedwell manifold. |

Laurent does that mean you took the big step in misleading French authorities:-) But I am with you no one can see unless they are an expert. Bas |

Bas, A friend has a brocken manifold on his 1275cc. As I have a 948cc manifold on stock, I would give it to him if it was the right part. But it won't fit, so I'll keep it. I have a 3 in 1 small bore exhaust manifold for my next 1030cc engine. Could you confirm the 3 in 1 small bore will increase the torque, and a LCB will increase the top end power? laurent |

Nick. are the ports on that manifold square or round? and is it surplus to your requirements...? Mark. |
M T Boldry |
They're round, Mark. About 31mm. And I can see the marks of the square corners on the flange faces, so not a perfect airflow. Nice thick flanges, though. Not surplus yet, though might be. Cherry's about to come off the road for an overhaul, and I'll review everything before I chuck anything out. But I expect I'll stick with the Maniflow. |
Nick |
Nick The reason that the ports are round is so that they match the round ports of a Speedwell alloy head. |
Dave O'Neill 2 |
This is what a Speedwell manifold gasket looks like...

Also, something I discovered recently is that the Manifolds are shorter for the lower CC engines. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this to be the case, which is proving useful in my current rebuild for getting Maniflow to give me a shorter 1275 Manifold to prevent it grounding out quite so much this time around! |
